Learning at a distance requires a team approach. The team being the teacher, the child and the home tutor. The teacher brings their knowledge and their skills along with the learning materials. These include:
- access to the Primary School’s Learning Management System, where you will find our course booklets with written instructions and guidelines designed for SIDE Primary School
- custom designed support material, including CDs, DVD's and kits
- email/telephone communication
- induction meetings
- other online learning materials
- visits to SIDE
- online lessons through Saba
There are up to 14 modules of work for Years K - 6 in a school year. Other support material is provided in the form of Home Tutor Guides and Resource Books. The modules are numbered; theme based and contain sufficient work for 10 days per fortnight for Years Pre-Primary to Six, and four days per fortnight for Kindergarten. Lessons are flexible and teachers modify the programs to meet the needs of individual students. Other supplementary lessons are also provided throughout the year. A school calendar gives suggested completion dates for each module.
The students bring their personalities, prior learning and the commitment to learn to the group. In addition to gaining the expected learning skills from any Kindergarten to Year 6 course, learning by distance provides our students with the opportunity to develop core values that benefit them throughout life. Learning by distance encourages our students to become self-directed learners. Our students develop:
- communication skills
- flexibility in their approach
- resourcefulness and maturity
- confidence with technology.
In today's rapidly changing world, having these highly demanded skills is what distinguishes our students. Our students are prepared for a life of learning and have the adaptability and capacity to meet tomorrow's challenges.
The role of the home tutor is a demanding and time consuming one. It is also fundamental to student success. If students are to be successful in distance education, it is essential that the home tutor play an integral role in the program.
Wrapped around this core group is the school administration team, the education assistants, the resource centre, the school psychologists and other agencies if needed.
"Thank you so much for your help and support over the last six months, the schooling has been something that has helped our family grow together and bond. This experience will be one we will remember and treasure for the rest of our lives."
