Eligibility Guidelines

Approval of enrolment at SIDE is based on:
•    eligibility criteria being met, and
•    documentation being provided.

There is a minimum enrolment period of one Western Australian school semester or 20 school weeks and students must be of compulsory school age (see table below). Each student’s enrolment eligibility is reviewed annually.
To apply to enrol, a student must be a permanent Australian resident and reside in Western Australia.

Conditions of Enrolment

•   understand that eligibility for enrolment may be reviewed
•   remain in contact with the SIDE teacher/s

The following categories are guidelines for determining eligibility.

The student needs to meet one of the criteria
Criterion 1
Distance between home and nearest government school is 16 km or more and distance between home and available transport service to nearest government school is 4.5 km or more.
Criterion 2
Distance between home and nearest government school is 8 km or more and distance between home and available transport service to nearest government school is 8 km or more.

Travel time between home and nearest government school return journey takes 3 hours or more. Available transport means any regular scheduled public transport, private carrier or school service that currently provides a pick-up point within the specified distances of the student's home, or would do so if requested by the family. A transport service includes any combination or connections of such   transport. For example, the bus nearest to the student's home may not take the student straight to school but may connect directly or indirectly with others that do.

Special Circumstances Enrolments (Referral Program)

The Referral Program is coordinated by SIDE's school psychologists, who gather information from a number of sources to assess eligibility.
Enrolment in the Referral Program is not considered to be a long term alternative to regular schooling. Students need to be working towards re-integration back into a school or an alternative program.
If a student is genuinely unable to attend a regular school or alternative education program they are eligible to apply for enrolment. Submitting an application does not mean your child is enrolled, it is only the first part of the process.

Enrolment categories and evidence required:

Medical
•    Evidence from the student's specialist outlining the student's medical condition and how it impacts on their ability to attend school or an alternative education program.
•    This documentation should include an assessment of the length of time it is expected that the student will be unable to attend a regular school.
•    A Return to school or alternative program plan signed off by the school and the parent/caregiver (and student if appropriate).

Severe mental health
•    Evidence required - a formal diagnosis of a mental health condition and contact details of the clinician (e.g. clinical psychologist) who is currently working with the student.
•    A Return to school or alternative program plan signed off by the school and the parent/caregiver (and student if appropriate).

Application
- To make an enquiry about the Referral Program for a Kindergarten to Year 6 student with special circumstances, phone SIDE on 9242 6347 or 9242 6300 for a Secondary aged student. A SIDE school psychologist will then contact you to determine if the student is eligible.
Further details can be found in  'School Partnerships - Service Provision Years K - 12'.

Other applicants

Students who do not fit into any of the above categories may still apply to enrol with SIDE. To do so they need to gain approval from their relevant Director of Schools, who will then liaise with the Principal of SIDE.

The final decision regarding eligibility is made by the Principal of SIDE.
